Scoliosis Brace

Doctors advise patients to wear a brace to stop a curve from getting any worse when the patient:
  • is still growing and has an idiopathic curve that is more than 25 to 30 degrees;
  • has at least 2 years of growth remaining, has an idiopathic curve that is between 20 and 29 degrees, and, if a girl, has not had her first menstrual period; or
  • is still growing and has an idiopathic curve between 20 and 29 degrees that is getting worse.

Milwaukee brace for scoliosis

The Milwaukee Brace is quite common and is used particularly for high thoracic curves. The brace extends from the neck to the pelvis and consists of a plastic pelvic girdle and a neck ring connected by metal bars in the front and the back of the brace. Pressure pads push against the patient's curve to prevent further deformity. The metal bars help extend the length of the torso, and the neck ring keeps the head centered over the pelvis.

Thoracolumbosacral orthosis (TLSO) for scoliosis

Patients can wear this brace to correct curves whose apex is at or below the eighth thoracic vertebra (see "Normal Spine" diagram). The TLSO is an underarm brace, which means that it fits under the arm and around the rib cage, lower back, and hips.

The Boston Brace for scoliosis

The Boston Brace covers from below the breast to the beginning of the pelvic area in the front and from below the scapulae to the tail bone in the back. The brace's design forces the lumbar area to flex, which pushes in the abdomen and flattens the posterior lumbar curve. Pressure pads are also placed strategically along the curve.

The Spinecor brace for scoliosis

SpineCor is a new breakthrough treatment for idiopathic scoliosis utilising a dynamic corrective brace (DCB), clinical assistant diagnostic software (SAS) and postural measurement equipment (Freepoint).  In worldwide clinical use, this new treatment has been shown to be effective in 89% of cases (either by stabilisation or improvement in (Cobb) angle of the curve).

Charleston Bending Brace for scoliosis

This brace is molded to conform to the patient's body while he or she is bent against the curve (towards the rounded-out portion of the curve). This brace is worn only at night while the patient is sleeping, thus "overcorrecting" the curve for eight hours per day.

Although bracing may not always be effective in preventing a spinal curve from getting worse, the best results occur when:

  • Bracing is started early, while a child is still growing.
  • The spinal curve is between 25 and 40 degrees. Some doctors may use brace treatment for curves up to 45 degrees.
  • The brace is well fitted.
  • The child wears the brace for the prescribed amount of time.
  • There is family support for the child.
