A hairline fracture is minor fracture in which the bone fragments remain in alignment,
appearing on x-ray film as a fine line.
Symptoms of a hairline fracture include
- pain that is usually severe and gets worse with time and movement
- swelling
- bruising
- limitation of movement or inability to bear weight
- numbness and tingling
- paleness of the injured area
Treatment of a hairline fracture
For most hairline fractures you will be asked to follow the RICE protocol
- Rest
- Ice
- Compression
- Elevation
In rare cases, a splint or cast may be needed temporarily especially it it is on a high
stress area of a bone. Surgery may be needed for fractures that do not heal, or heal the
wrong way.
