Bone Spur Treatment
The treatment for a bone spur depends on the location and cause of the bone spur. It is
important to treat the cause to keep the problem from worsening.
Rest as a treatment of a bone spur
Pain associated from a bone spur is commonly caused by irritation of the surrounding
tissue. Giving that tissue a rest from the irritation can significantly reduce the pain.
Drugs used in the treatment of a bone spur.
- Anti-inflammatory medications are often given to help control the pain and the
inflammation caused by the bone spur.
- Muscle relaxants are sometimes given when the irritation causes muscle tension or
spasms.
- Some times cortisone injections are given in the area of the bone spur to control the
pain and inflammation.
Orthotics for treating a bone spur
One of the most common places for a bone spur is on the heel of the foot. Many times an
orthotic insert is recommended that takes the pressure off the bone spur when walking.
Surgery for treating a bone spur
Typically as a last resort surgery is performed. A common area for surgery is in the
spinal area. Arthritis can cause bone spurs that effect the nerves around the spinal
column. When this happens surgery is often called for to correct the problem. |
