Calcitonin or Miacalcin is a hormone used to treat symptoms of Paget's disease of bone,
hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood), and postmenopausal osteoporosis (bone
weakening).
Precautions concerning Calcitonin or Miacalcin
Before using Calcitonin or Miacalcin salmon injection,
- tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Calcitonin or Miacalcin or any
other drugs, salmon, or proteins.
- tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you
are taking, including vitamins.
- if you are premenopausal, tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant,
or are breast-feeding. Calcitonin or Miacalcin salmon injection should not be used during
pregnancy or while breast-feeding. If you become pregnant, call your doctor.
Side effects of Calcimar or Miacalcin
Although side effects from Calcitonin or Miacalcin salmon injection are not common,
they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- upset stomach
- vomiting
- decreased appetite
- stomach pain
- unusual taste sensation (e.g., salty or metallic)
- increased urination
- flushing of the face, ears, hands, or feet
- tingling and/or tenderness of palms of hands or soles of feet
- headache
- nasal congestion
- dizziness
- weakness
- chills
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
- difficulty breathing
- swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, or throat
- skin rash or hives
- chest pain or pressure
- redness, tenderness, swelling, or warmth at the injection site
